It makes you think ...
About 2 days ago, Utusan Malaysia reported that 2 Malays were caught by the religious authority in Pahang for violating laws on alcoholic drinking by Muslim. One was caught drinking beer in the Cerating Village hotel while the other, a woman, was caught elsewhere in Kuantan.
The two violators stand to be given the maximum punishment under syariah law which is 7 years jail together with 5 strokes of the rattan. Such harsh treatment on violators are meted out by the Talibans in Afghanistan, but certainly not in Malaysia.
It nakes one think twice to be a Muslim in this country where a Muslim is subject to two sets of laws, common law and syariah law.
It seems to me that the penalty for Muslims drinking alcohol is much too harsh to the extent that the lawbreaker will be traumatised for the rest of his or her life when the punishment should be such as to make the person concerned not to repeat what he or she did in the past.
