Today I read about Najib's remark that says that if
Vijay Singh had become a Malaysian citizen, he would never have become the world's no 1 golfer. I agree entirely with Najib's statement. Had Vijay been a Malaysian, living in a Malaysian environment, the highest honour he could have attained would be a Club Champion, or even a Malaysian champion. He would be working as an honorary club captain in one of the better golf clubs, getting fat, and spending most of his time drinking at the golf club, discussing with the likes of Serbegeth Singh, over anything about everything, and of course be given a Datukship and some business incentives for his contribution to golf. Vijay would be just like any other Malaysian sportsman in the past who never made it big in the international circuit. This is not to say that Vijay is lacking in talent as he had emphatically proven otherwise.
The fact that had he been a Malaysian, the determination to be a sportsman par excellence is simply not there as he would have been spoiled rotten by the Malaysian environment.
